What is a tongue tie?

A tongue tie (Anklyoglossia) is a tight band of tissue under the tongue. We call this a “tethered oral tissue”. This tissue is more specifically known as the lingual frenum. When the lingual frenum is restricted, it can negatively impact lingual strength and range of motion. It is important to note a speech therapist cannot diagnose a tongue tie but is a necessary provider in your treatment team.

How can this impact my infant??

Your infant may demonstrate some of the following: difficulty nursing, poor latch, prolonged feeds, poor weight gain. Your infant may also be gassy or have excessive reflux/colic. These are just a few ways your baby could be impacted by a tongue tie.

How can this impact growing kiddos??

Your growing child may start to demonstrate picky eating, poor oral hygiene, poor tongue mobility, difficulty producing speech sounds, or feeding challenges. These are just a few ways your child could be impacted by a tongue tie.

How can this impact adults??

Many adults later learn they have a tongue tie due to chronic head, neck, and back pain. If you have suffered from TMJ, migraines, poor sleep, and/or head, neck, and back pain talk to your primary care physician or chiropractor. Next step, schedule an evaluation with a Speech Therapist with training in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

If you are concerned your baby or growing child might have a tongue tie, talk to your pediatrician and schedule an evaluation with an IBCLC or a Speech Therapist with training in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
